What Is AEO? Here’s Why It Matters for Your Business
Answer Engine Optimization isn't about ranking anymore. It's about becoming the answer AI gives when someone asks a question about your industry.
Traditional search meant typing a few words into Google and clicking through a list of blue links. That's not how most people search anymore.
Now they ask a full question to ChatGPT, Claude, or Google's AI Overview, and they get a full answer back. No list of links to sort through. Just an answer, sometimes with a source or two named inside it.
That shift has created a new job for marketers: making sure your company is the source the AI names. That job has a name. It's called AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization.
If you've never heard the term, you're not behind. It's new enough that a lot of small businesses haven't touched it yet. That's exactly why now is the time to learn it.
What Is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of shaping your content so AI tools can find it, understand it, and use it to answer someone's question.
Think about the last time you Googled something. Chances are, before you even scrolled to the links, you saw a full answer sitting at the top of the page. That's Google's AI Overview, and it shows up automatically, whether you're looking for it or not. Same goes for asking ChatGPT or Claude a question directly. Either way, you got an answer, not a list of links to click through. AEO is about making sure your business is part of that answer.
It's helpful to think of AEO as living under the SEO umbrella, not as something separate from it. SEO is the broad goal: helping search tools find, understand, and recommend your content. AEO is the newer, more specific piece of that goal, focused on one outcome: getting your content chosen as the answer inside an AI-generated response.
SEO competes for position. AEO competes for selection.
AEO vs. SEO: What's Actually Different
Traditional SEO, as we know it today, was built around optimizing for Google’s search results. It's about ranking high enough that a person sees your link and clicks it. Keywords, backlinks, site speed, and clean structure all serve that goal.
AEO asks a different question. If an AI tool needed to answer "what does a sales enablement consultant do," would it find your content clear enough, specific enough, and trustworthy enough to use, whether or not anyone clicks through to your site at all?
So it's not SEO versus AEO. It's SEO as the broader goal of search visibility, with AEO as the piece built specifically for how AI tools generate answers. There's a third term you'll start seeing too: generative engine optimization, or GEO. It's a wider lens than AEO, focused on how your brand shows up across the whole AI-driven search experience, not just inside a single answer. For most businesses, AEO is the right place to start.
AI tools tend to favor content that:
- Answers a specific question clearly, near the top of the page
- Backs up claims with real detail instead of vague statements
- Stays current and gets updated instead of sitting untouched for years
- Comes from a source that looks credible, meaning a real author, a real business, and consistent information across the web
That's just good content practice, sharpened for a new audience: the AI reading it before your customer does.
Why This Matters for You and Your Business
Here's the part that should get your attention: your potential customer might be forming an opinion about your industry, your competitors, and your solution before they ever land on your website.
If someone asks an AI tool "how do I build a repeatable sales process" or "what's the difference between a CRM and a sales enablement platform," the answer they get shapes what they think, what they search next, and who they consider. If your company isn't part of that answer, you're not in the conversation. It doesn't matter how good your website is if the AI never mentions you.
Many companies haven't touched AEO yet. The ones who start now get a real head start on the ones who wait.
Where to Start
You don't need a total content overhaul to start figuring out how to optimize for AI search. A few practical moves:
- Write content that answers real questions your customers ask, in plain language, near the top of the page.
- Keep your core pages updated. Stale content is easy for AI tools to skip over.
- Make sure your business information (name, services, location) is consistent everywhere it appears online.
- Support your claims with specifics instead of generic statements. "We help sales teams close more deals" says less than showing exactly how.
This is also where a clear content and marketing strategy earns its keep. AEO isn't a separate project bolted onto your marketing. It's a lens you apply to the marketing you're already doing.
Getting found by AI isn't luck. It's strategy.
